Kenefick Park - Omaha, NE

3/16 - It was Spring Break and we took a two day trip to Omaha, Nebraska to see the sights and give a test run for our long trip this summer.

Our first stop was Kenefick Park. Right on the Iowa/Nebraska boarder there are two very large train engines and we've always wanted to stop and see them. It was the perfect opportunity. Next to the parking lot there are these ancient train wheels that look like they're rolling down the hill. It was a fun picture and the kids love playing around them and touching them.

Alex peaking through the center of a train wheel.

This is the Big Boy, the largest steam engine ever built. It was quite impressive. The wheels were bigger than I am. The kids were in awe as they looked at it up close.

This is the Centennial, the largest diesel engine ever built. It too was impressive and the kids loved it because it matches the trains that Aaron drives.

I don't think we were supposed to touch them, given the metal bars all the way around, but Aaron wanted to show the kids how the couplers worked. Aaron justified it by saying if they didn't want you to touch it they'd put up a big sign. He lifted a lever and moved stuff around and Spencer especially thought it was pretty cool. It's fun to have a train guy along when visiting train things. He had all sorts of inside knowledge.

I love the kids with the UP shield. Alex was loving pounding on it too.
The glare was pretty bad but I couldn't resist this picture to show how huge the wheels are on the Big Boy.
